Chess Pavilion at Sutro Baths

The Chess Pavilion is a proposed structure situated at a 75 ft elevation within Sutro Baths, located in the northeastern part of San Francisco. I named my concept Guided Tranquility because I wanted to create a space that provides chess players with a sense of calm and relaxation both before and during their games.

My design is based on a composition of nine square cubes. In developing the pavilion, I sought to preserve the original geometry of every line in my concept sketch before translating them into walls. This intentional approach allowed me to maintain a sense of organic irregularity within the structure.

I aimed to express tranquility and calm through the use of natural light, which, along with the views, serves as a key element in supporting the concept. Light enters the pavilion at different times of the day, creating shifting moments that encourage visitors to explore, experience, and enjoy the space.

The entrance is designed as a diagonal threshold, forming an oblique path that makes the entry intuitive and welcoming. The 45-degree diagonal movement continues through the pavilion, guiding visitors naturally through the building.

Within the pavilion, I created different eddies—small zones where players can sit, relax, or play while enjoying views of the surroundings. Each zone highlights a distinct experience: one frames the Cypress trees, another emphasizes the ocean with a two-story perspective, and the first-floor area, which is slightly excavated, connects closely to the earth, offering a meditative space inspired by Mother Nature.
